Gadgets and Gizmos While Driving

However, this is not the only gadget that he owns. Instead, he has a ton of gadgets that he uses….in his car. The other day, he came home and proudly announced to me that he had a phone conversation with one of his friends while talking on the phone, using his iTouch, sipping an iced tea and driving a manual shift car. I didn’t want to hear any more of the story.

Driving is dangerous enough with the use of technology thrown into the mix; and the sad fact is that while technology is supposed to be great, it seems that it is having an adverse effect on our driving capabilities. For example, most people nowadays own some sort of GPS device. For me, my phone has a built-in GPS tracking device. For my friend’s GPS system, he simply bought a relatively cheap model from a sports store that plugs into his dashboard and gives him turn by turn direction. You think to yourself, How bad can this be? Well, if you are driving and trying to figure out how to use a particular device, then it turns out that this can be incredibly bad. I allowed my boyfriend approximately two close calls while driving around with the GPS device before I mad him dismantle it and put it away. My nerves simply couldn’t take it.

Now, if we use the GPS device while we are driving, I know how to operate it as well as he does, this way in case something goes wrong with the unit while we are driving, I can attend to the GPS while he focuses his eyes on the road. The same is true if I am driving. Another culprit while you are on the road is the cell phone. It is sad to think that I can now no longer really remember a time where we didn’t have cell phones. Now, things have gotten to the point where when you drive into New York to go anywhere, there is an electronic road sign every few miles that reads out messages to the passing motorists that remind them of certain laws such as buckling your seat belt, putting away cellular devices and leaving enough stopping/reaction distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.

How embarrassing! We should all remember these rules. Not only this, but if we value our own health and well being, then we should put away the gadgets and gizmos and focus instead on the road. Remember a time when we weren’t so distracted while we were driving? Well, it is not too late to go back to doing just that by simply turning our cell phones to vibrate, sticking to one play list in our iTunes and not trying to fiddle with the GPS device while we are driving!
